A Tiantai term indicating the three periods of the Buddha's teaching:

(1) bestowing the truth in Hīnayāna and other partial forms;

(2) opening of the perfect truth like the lotus, as in the <Lotus Sutra>;

(3) abrogating the earlier imperfect forms.
